Athol Community Space
Athol (pop. 11,299), is the area’s largest town and commercial center, has main streets lined with brick commercial buildings while side streets contain neatly-landscaped homes.
Athol was first settled in 1735 and originally named “Pequoiag” after the Indians who inhabited the area. Colonel John Murray, a prominent landowner, changed the name of the town to Athol when it was incorporated in 1762. Apparently the landscape resembled his homeland in Blair-Atholl, Scotland.
Among the town’s famous natives are Busby Berkeley, Hollywood choreographer; Charles Starrett, who portrayed the Durango Kid in old westerns; and Dave Bergeron, brass player for the 60’s rock group Blood, Sweat & Tears.
