The first settlement in Wendell was made as early as 1754 by Thomas Osgood and others. The town was incorporated in 1781. Its territory was originally composed of a tract taken from the northern part of Shutesbury and that part of Ervingshire which lay south of the Millers River. The town was named for Judge Oliver Wendell of Boston, a patron of the town, who owned much land in and around town.
